After you have created a new empty matrix for character data, Mesquite will automatically open a data editor window so that you can enter the values for taxa and characters. In the image below, the editing cursor (the I-beam) has been selected and a cell of the matrix touched, so that its contents may be edited. Because the example below is of Standard Categorical Data, character states can be entered as "0", "1", "2", and so on.
